But this particular area of the Raanstad – one of the most densely populated in the Netherlands - is increasingly being characterised by a mixing of functions, by a blurring of city and countryside and by a constant increase in mobility.

What type of future park and urbanity could be considered appropriate? And how would it work?

This project speculates on how the orchestrated mixing of functions, environments and occupants could form the basis of a new type of park and city: a FlowingParkCity.

The elements to be retained from ‘Floriade 2002’ include site infrastructure and services, an artificial hill, botanical gardens, public spaces, water features and large areas that once functioned as visitor car parks.

The site is well connected. The Amsterdam Zuid-tangent high-speed bus line links the site to the airport (15 minutes travel time), to the towns of Haarlem (10 minutes travel time) and Haarlemmermeer (15 minutes travel time) and to a string of villages on the southern perimeter of Amsterdam. The N205 motorway links to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

Features include lakes, a golf course, a canal, a mature forest, some historical monuments and a section of Amsterdam’s medieval fortified dyke that once ringed the city border the site.

S333 considered what type of short-term or long-term residents and workers would enjoy these amenities, and also what other daily, monthly or seasonal functions would be needed to attract businesses, fun-seekers and casual visitors.

Following its analysis, S333 decided to weave three bands of activities and environments through the site. The economic driver is the ‘intensive band’ of functions and services that cater directly for Schiphol airport’s visitors, support services and businesses. Recreational facilities, the golf course, the zoo and the lake are located in the ‘extensive band’. The ‘cultural network band’ contains new pedestrian and cycle routes.
